Introduction
In pursuance of Order No. 2966-ICA(N) issued by the Information & Cultural Affairs Department, Government of West Bengal, and the notification issued by The West Bengal University of Health Sciences (WBUHS) regarding the observance of Paschimbanga Divas (West Bengal Day) on 20 June 2026. JMN Medical College, Chakdaha, organised a commemorative programme to celebrate the rich history, culture, traditions, and heritage of West Bengal.
The programme was organised with the objective of promoting awareness among students, faculty members, and staff regarding the historical significance of the formation of the State of West Bengal and its contributions to healthcare, education, literature, science, and nation-building.
Programme Proceedings
The observance commenced with the Inauguration Ceremony and Lighting of the Lamp by the Director-Academic Affairs, Senior Faculty Members and students of JMN Medical College. The ceremonial lighting of the lamp symbolised the spread of knowledge, wisdom and enlightenment.
The Welcome Address was delivered by the Director- Academic Affairs, Prof. Dr Aniruddha Neogi, who welcomed the dignitaries, faculty members, students, staff and emphasised the importance of observing Paschimbanga Divas to honour the rich legacy and achievements of West Bengal.
Student representative delivered an Address on the Significance of Paschimbanga Divas, highlighting the historical background of the State and its enduring contributions to the cultural, social and intellectual development of India.
The programme featured a Special Lecture on “West Bengal’s Contribution to Healthcare, Education and Nation Building” delivered by Prof. Dr Saujen Basu. In his enlightening address, Prof. Basu highlighted the pivotal role of West Bengal in shaping modern healthcare, medical education, scientific research, social reform and academic excellence. He also encouraged students to uphold the values of service, dedication and professional integrity.
To showcase Bengal’s literary heritage, students presented a Bengali Recitation, which was appreciated by the audience for its cultural significance. This was followed by a Patriotic and Cultural Singing Performance by students. The performances celebrated the spirit of Bengal and fostered a sense of patriotism and cultural unity among the participants.
A vibrant Cultural Dance Performance was presented by the students, depicting the diverse folk traditions, customs, and cultural heritage of West Bengal. The performance vividly portrayed the artistic richness and cultural identity of the State.
The programme concluded with a Vote of Thanks delivered by a faculty member, expressing gratitude to the distinguished guests, participants, organizers and attendees for making the event a success.
The observance ended with the singing of the National Anthem by all present.
Participation and Outcome
The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, faculty members, non-teaching staff, and institutional authorities. The event provided a valuable platform for cultural expression and historical awareness while strengthening appreciation for the heritage and achievements of West Bengal.
The observance successfully fulfilled the objectives outlined by the Government of West Bengal and the West Bengal University of Health Sciences by promoting awareness of the State’s historical significance, cultural legacy, and contributions to healthcare, education, and national development.
As part of the programme, certificates were distributed to the participants and contributors in recognition of their active involvement and valuable contributions to the successful observance of Paschim Banga Divas. The certificate distribution ceremony encouraged greater participation and acknowledged the efforts of all concerned.
Conclusion
